Washing Machine Maintenance Tips for Winnipeg Homeowners

May 9, 2026  ·  Appliance Repair World, Winnipeg

A washing machine is one of the most frequently used appliances in any Winnipeg home. Taking care of it properly will help it last longer, perform better, and smell fresher. Here’s what Appliance Repair World recommends for Winnipeg homeowners.

1. Clean the Drum Monthly

Run a hot wash cycle with a cup of white vinegar or a washing machine cleaning tablet once a month. This removes detergent buildup, bacteria, and odors that accumulate in the drum. Front-load washers are especially prone to mold around the door seal — wipe it down after every wash.

2. Use the Right Amount of Detergent

Using too much detergent — a very common mistake — creates excess suds that don’t rinse out fully. This leaves residue on your clothes and inside the machine, and can even cause error codes on modern HE (High Efficiency) washers. Always use HE detergent in HE machines and follow the manufacturer’s dosage.

3. Don’t Overload the Machine

Stuffing too many clothes in stresses the drum bearings, motor, and suspension. It also prevents proper rinsing. As a rule, clothes should be able to tumble freely — the drum should never be packed solid.

4. Check and Clean the Drain Filter

Most front-load washers have a drain pump filter located behind a small panel at the bottom front. This filter catches lint, coins, and other debris. A clogged filter causes drainage problems and the dreaded E21, 5E, or OE error codes. Clean it every 2–3 months.

5. Leave the Door Open After Washing

This is especially important for front-load washers. Closing the door immediately traps moisture and promotes mold growth inside the drum and door seal. Leave the door ajar for a few hours after washing to allow everything to dry out.

6. Check Hoses Every Year

The hot and cold water supply hoses behind your washer can crack or weaken over time. A burst hose can cause significant water damage in your Winnipeg home. Check them annually for bulging, cracking, or corrosion, and replace rubber hoses every 5 years. Consider upgrading to braided stainless steel hoses.
