Dishwasher Not Cleaning Properly? 6 Reasons and How to Fix Them — Winnipeg Guide

May 9, 2026  ·  Appliance Repair World, Winnipeg

A dishwasher that leaves food particles on dishes, leaves them wet, or produces spotty glasses is frustrating — but the solution is often simpler than you think. At Appliance Repair World in Winnipeg, dishwasher repair is one of our most common calls. Here are the six most common reasons your dishwasher isn’t cleaning properly.

1. Clogged or Dirty Filter

Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter in the bottom of the tub that catches food particles. When this filter is clogged, water can’t circulate properly and food residue gets redeposited on your dishes. Remove the filter (consult your manual), rinse it under running water, and use a soft brush if necessary. Clean it monthly.

2. Blocked Spray Arms

The spray arms have small holes that jet water onto your dishes. Mineral buildup from Winnipeg’s hard water can block these holes over time. Remove the spray arms (they usually unscrew or unclip), hold them up to the light, and use a toothpick to clear any blocked holes. Soak in warm vinegar water to dissolve mineral deposits.

3. Wrong Detergent or Wrong Amount

Using too little detergent, using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent, or using old/clumped detergent are all common causes of poor cleaning. Use fresh dishwasher pods or powder and ensure the detergent compartment is closing properly.

4. Low Water Temperature

Dishwashers need water at 60°C to properly dissolve detergent and sanitize dishes. If your hot water heater is set too low, the dishwasher won’t clean effectively. Run your kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting a cycle. If the water still isn’t hot enough, the dishwasher’s heating element may have failed — a repair we handle regularly in Winnipeg.

5. Hard Water Buildup

Winnipeg has moderately hard water, which causes calcium and lime deposits to build up on the interior of the dishwasher, the spray arms, and on your glasses. Use a dishwasher cleaner once a month, and use rinse aid in every cycle to prevent spots on glasses.

6. Faulty Wash Pump or Motor

If none of the above fixes the problem, the wash pump motor may be failing — producing less water pressure than needed to effectively clean dishes. This is a mechanical repair that requires a qualified technician. Appliance Repair World replaces wash pump motors on all major dishwasher brands in Winnipeg. Call 431-887-3090 for same-day service.
